Generally speaking, the decision on renewal was quite justified, taking into account a mainly favorable reception of the second series by critics and viewers. Besides, “Salem” Season 2 has illustrated quite steady ratings. Although, it’s worth noting that the audience of the series significantly decreased in the second season. Currently, according to IMDB, “Salem” has a score of 7.2 out of 10 based on over 15,400 user votes, 70 reviews from viewers, and 4 reviews from critics. At the same time, according to Rotten Tomatoes, the second series of the drama has an average score of 4.4 out of 5 and a 89% approval rating based on over 100 user votes. Meanwhile, according to Metacritic, the second season of “Salem” has a score of 7.4 out of 10 based on 16 user ratings.
The premiere of Season 2 has drawn 0.510 million viewers (-66.47% compared to the previous season’s debut) with a 0.22 demo rating among adults (18-49), whereas a finale of the series has attracted 0.337 million viewers with a 0.14 demo rating among adults (18-49). The first season of Salem averaged a 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic with approximately 0.39 million viewers.
The series focuses on the Salem Witch Trials that have been initiated in the City of Salem since 1692, when Puritan leaders headed the government. The series casts doubt, whether Puritan rightful in their actions or not? Whether the convictions rightful? And, finally, whether the accused really guiltless?
Aside from that, the series’ creators were focused on “true witches,” who had, apparently, controlled a day-today life of the locals, having an opportunity to perfectly hide their identity. The show’s protagonists John Alden (Shane West) and Mary Sibley (Janet Montgomery) find themselves amidst the events that lead the town into hysteria, fear and despair. Due to Puritan power, each citizen of the town could be considered as “witch,” that was so useful to the authorities, to get rid of any citizen, who was disagreeable to them.
Season 3 Release Date

Relying on quite favorable indicators of the second series, WGN America has confirmed the renewal of “Salem” for a third season. “Salem” Season 3 premiere is slated for Halloween week, November 2, 2016 at 9|8c on WGN America.
