‘The 100’ Gets Season 5 Renewal on The CW
“The 100” has lost over 35% of the viewing audience during its fourth season premiere that held on Feb 1, 2017 on The CW. This is not a reason to panic, however, it’s worth noting that the season premiere has garnered just a little over 1.2 million viewers, as well as a quite controversial reception of the target audience. In spite of this, most of fans wonder, whether or not we will see a fifth season of “The 100” on The CW, and if this happens, when will its release date? On March 10, 2017, Mark Pedowitz announced that The CW renewed “The 100” for a fifth season. Here is our (former) forecast:
Despite the drop of viewership, we have been expecting that another season of “The 100” could take place on The CW. Noteworthy, that The CW has picked up “The 100” for a fourth season despite the fact that there were only three novels in the original series. The CW confirmed a fourth season of “The 100” on March 11, 2016. However, it’s worth noting that a fourth novel, “Rebellion,” was released just on December 6, 2016. Hence, it doesn’t matter for The CW will there be the other novels in the sci-fi series or not.
Let’s take a look at some other major indicators of the current season that might help us to figure out why The CW decided to pick up “The 100” for Season 5. An overall score of the post-apocalyptic drama remains quite strong. Currently, according to IMDb, “The 100” has a score of 7.8/10 based on over 116,600 user votes. At the same time, according to Rotten Tomatoes, the current season of “The 100” has an average score of 6.85/10 and a 86% approval rating among critics, as well as a score of a mere 2.6/5 and a 45% approval rating among the viewers. Meanwhile, according to the statistics presented by Metacritic, the fourth season of “The 100” has a score of a mere 2.5/10 based on 16 user ratings.
Let’s now take a look at the viewing figures of the current season. The season premiere has drawn 1.212 million viewers (-35.57% compared to last season’s premiere) with a 0.40 demo rating among adults (18-49). For comparison, “The 100” Season 3 averaged a 0.48 demo rating among adults (18-49) with 1.33 million total viewers.
Usually, this indicator (television ratings) serves as a major figure, which is able to affect the decision of renewal. However, we regard this indicator pretty strong despite the serious decrease compared to the results of the previous seasons.
The main thing we are worried about is that “The 100” is coming to its logical conclusion. However, the storyline hasn’t exhausted itself yet, anyway. Thus, our verdict is that “The 100” Season 5 is quite possible. Were we right or wrong, we’ll see in the future. As turned out, we were right.
Set in the dystopian future, “The 100” follows a group of juvenile offenders, who were sent to Earth from the Ark, having a one way ticket, in order to scout out the situation on the ground after the nuclear apocalypse. The group managed to survive, however, they faced with the many surprises on Earth. The TV series is created by Jason Rothenberg, who also serves as executive producer jointly with Leslie Morgenstein, Matt Miller, Gina Girolamo, Bharat Nalluri and Elizabeth Craft.
Notification of the Release Date (Season 5)
“The 100” Season 4 kicked off on Wednesday, February 01, 2017 at 9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT, and its debut drew 1.212 million viewers, was well received by critics, but has received an ambivalent reception from the target audience. As we expected, The CW turned quite satisfied with the statistics of the fourth season. Therefore, The CW has decided to pick up “The 100” for a next season. But the exact date remains unknown so far.
