‘Sherlock’ Series 5: Is it possible?
A modern epopee about the adventures of Sherlock Holmes apparently comes to an end. But does BBC One really intend to conclude such a successful television series? Whether or not we expect “Sherlock” Series 5 on BBC One in the UK and PBS in the US? There has been no official announcement from BBC One regarding the renewal up to now. However, in his recent interview for Entertainment Weekly, dated Jan 1, 2017, “Sherlock” showrunner Steven Moffat hinted ambiguously that a Series 5 of “Sherlock” is quite possible. Furthermore, yet in 2014, it was rumoured that Benedict Cumberbatch inked a deal with the BBC, to star in a Series 5.
First of all, it’s worth noting that “Sherlock,” perhaps, is the most successful drama on the British television. It was nominated for numerous awards and has received critical acclaim as well. But is this enough for BBC One to make a decision to renew “Sherlock” for a next season? Let’s take a look at some figures in order to count up the odds on renewal.
Indeed, “Sherlock” can boast with the impressive viewing figures, both in the UK and in the US. But as for the reception, it could be described as quite heterogeneous. While an overall score of the crime drama series is extremely strong, 9.2/10 based on over 537,000 user votes, according to IMDb. Currently, according to Rotten Tomatoes, the current season of the crime drama has an average score of 7.47/10 and a 60% approval rating among critics, while the viewers have rated the fourth series of “Sherlock” at a mere 3.3 out of 5 with a 55% approval rating. At the same time, according to Metacritic, the current season of “Sherlock” has a score of 6.6 out of 10 based on 45 user ratings. Although these statistics can’t be described as impressive, but the figures of the current season are still strong.
The season premiere has drawn 8.1 million viewers in the UK (-1.1 million viewers from season 3), whereas in the United States, Season 4 has garnered 3.7 million viewers (during its debut on PBS), and these figures are less than those of the previous season (4 million viewers). Despite a decrease of the viewing audience, these viewing figures are still incredibly strong.
Set in modern-day London, “Sherlock” typifies the contemporary vision of the classical private detective novel created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Holmes is now a consulting detective, whereas Watson is a doctor who has returned from military service in Afghanistan. The TV series is created by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, who also serve as executive producers.
Renewal Potential and Notification of the Release Date (Season 5)
“Sherlock” Series 4 comes to an end on Jan 15, 2017. BBC One has yet to announce the official decision on renewal or cancellation of the crime drama series. Meantime, all indications that “Sherlock” will be returning for a Series 5 on BBC One and PBS, given the data presented above. In general, the television ratings are still very strong, while a reception by critics and viewers is generally favourable. Therefore, we tend to believe that “Sherlock” Series 5 would take place. However, we would like to wait for the official announcement by the BBC.
